Key findings

Surveys in Czechia show negative attitudes toward persons perceived to be Muslims, shaped by media and stereotypes rather than real interactions. Many Czechs associate what they think of as “Muslims” with foreign migrants and issues in Western Europe, not local Muslim communities. These views are racialized and linked to fears of immigration. Intergroup contact, such as travel to Muslim-majority countries, can challenge stereotypes, but such opportunities are rare. The study urges better survey methods and more qualitative research to understand and reduce prejudice.

Methodology (Qualitative/Quantitative and exact type used, questionnaires etc)

Qualitative study, interviews

Sample details and representativeness

31 semi structured interviews with non-Muslim Czechs and Muslims living in Czechia conducted in 2020 and 2021
